Questions about Broadband
Q. What is broadband?
A. A broadband connection is a much faster Internet connection than dial up. Using ADSL and SDSL technology, it is now possible to bring you a broadband connection over your existing copper telephone wires, allowing you to surf the net at high speed. It is also possible to use your phone while you are online.
Q. How fast is broadband?
A. Broadband is up to 20 times faster than a standard dial-up connection, although the speed of connection is dependant on the level of service required, CI-Net can provide ADSL with download speeds of up to 8Mbps and SDSL with up and download speeds of 512kbps, 1Mbps and 2Mbps.
Q. How does it work?
A. The service makes use of your existing telephone line. It splits the signal into two channels, one for voice communications and the other for the high-speed data connection. It makes use of a frequency range not used in normal voice communications.
Q. Do I still have to pay BT line rental if I get broadband?
A. Yes. BT's telephone billing (line rental and call charges) are unrelated to broadband. You will however not have to make any calls to the Internet as broadband is an always-on connection.
A. Ordering your connection is very simple. Contact us either by phone
Q. How quickly will I be connected?
A. Usually 5 - 7 days from placing an order with us so long as everything is in place. SDSL usually takes a couple of extra days. Our implementation team will endeavour to have the installation completed as quickly as possible. You will be allocated a personal project co-ordinator who will liaise with all of the relevant parties and keep you informed at every stage.
Q. Can I install the hardware myself?
A. Your router will be pre-configured by our technical team, and delivered to you ready for use so all you need to do is connect it to your computer and the phone line. Should you require a wireless router, we can arrange for one of our engineers to complete the installation process.
Q. I currently have an ISDN / Home highway, can I still have broadband?
A. Yes – however the ISDN connection will have to be converted to a single analogue line. CI-Net will arrange this for you, however there will be a charge payable directly to BT.
Q. I have a Mac - can I use broadband?
A. Yes - our router firewalls are compatible with most Macs carrying a standard network card.
