British Legion connects with free space optics

The Royal British Legion, which runs the Annual Poppy appeal to raise some of the £75 million they spend each year on carrying out welfare work among the serving and ex-service community, has outgrown its Head Office in London’s Pall Mall. Rather than face the upheaval of a major relocation, they identified additional office space only a quarter of a mile away from the Head Office in which some of its staff could be accommodated.

The Problem: How to connect the staff in these two locations.

The Solution: Community Internet with business partner Trellis Works Limited has installed a Sunflower free space optics solution providing a 100Mbps LAN connection from the roof top of the Head Office to the window of the new offices in New Zealand House.

“Once we placed the order it took Community Internet only half a day to have the connection up and running, and the installation caused minimum disruption to our operations,” says Fred Kavoussian, Network Manager of The Royal British Legion. “Our free space optics solution delivers very high bandwidth and boosts productivity by providing high-speed LAN-to-LAN backbone connectivity between the two British Legion offices,” says Community Internet Managing Director Graham McLean.
