New WAN for David Cover

Chichester-based timber and building services company, David Cover, has gone live with a new resilient Wide Area Network which is delivering improved connectivity to enable over 200 staff at the company’s sites to access critical business trading software.

The new WAN, implemented by fully managed wide area networks, hosting and internet solutions company, CI-Net, incorporates multiple, load balanced ADSL connections to provide the required bandwidth between key locations. The network is based on standard IP technology, CI-Net supplied circuits and a private addressing scheme.

Performance on David Cover’s previous MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) network was deteriorating with delays and frequent time outs. An improvement in network connectivity was essential as Rupert Green, Finance Director, explained: “Staff in our depots rely on access to our centrally located back office trading software for everything from processing customer orders, to organising deliveries and keeping stock levels maintained. If we don’t have reliable connectivity, it affects business operations and ultimately the service we provide to customers.”

The new WAN incorporates StoneGate firewall appliances which load balance data along multiple connections to ensure it takes the fastest route to its destination. The appliances also provide a vital automatic failover facility as Mr. Green explained: “Business continuity is crucial so wherever we have multiple connections, the StoneGates are configured to enable the lines to failover to each other. If there is a problem with one line, we at least have some connectivity via the other to minimize disruption to our operations.”

The WAN infrastructure has been designed to be flexible and scalable making it possible to quickly change or add new links to increase or decrease bandwidth. CI-Net performs round-the-clock network monitoring of key network sites to keep abreast of traffic flows and address any issues that could cause disruption.

“We selected CI-Net because they were able to diagnose the problems we were experiencing on our previous network infrastructure and propose a flexible, cost effective solution that will be able to expand with the business,“ concluded Mr. Green.
